When the Long Island Power Authority announced plans to erect large transmission towers along a scenic back road, local residents launched a campaign to stop the project. Take a look at the proposal through their eyes.
While I am happy the cables will be buried, I feel we've been duped by LIPA.
Eight million dollars is a drop in the bucket for them. I believe this issue was a distraction for us, we were so involved with saving our views we neglected to see what LIPA was really up to. They HAVE already ruined the vistas. They have put up 35-foot poles with 9 to 10 cables plus some have what looks like wastebins suspended from them. Not only is this an awful eye-sore throughout Southampton Town, but it is also down the Main Street of Sag Harbor. The size of the poles required more poles to be placed than what had previously existed and cables were put up for the most part at night.
And at this time of year they are not so visible because of foliage. However, wait until winter when we who live here year round will be very dismayed. Additionally, I am angry that we, who do not have mega mansions, must suffer the effects for all this extra power demanded by people who may only use there homes a few times a season. The next hurricane will knock many of these horrendous poles down and we will suffer. There will be no power and the escape routes will be blocked. Then what happens?
GREAT! Good for you, good
GREAT! Good for you, good for us ... I still think LIPA positioned us to pay for it though ...
It doesn't matter as long as our scenic vistas are preserved. Thank you to all of you who fought the good fight!
Best Regards,
Melissa Osborne
