Suse Lowenstein was a painter, until it became too "flat." She then
turned to sculpture. After losing her oldest son in 1988 on PanAm Flight 103, she created Dark Elegy. She interviewed 76 mothers,
grandmothers, and sisters of victims, and photographed them when they began
talking about the moment they found out their loved one had died. The
sculptures are larger than life. She likes to create "life scenes." She
has had a home in Montauk for a long time but has lived there full-time
for the last eight years.
