At the very tip of Long Island is Montauk, a mecca for fishermen and
beach-goers. This is a short look at its long history, from the days of
the Montaukett tribe to the hamlet's development as a summer destination.
I'm a local special education teacher fom Hampton Bays and I enjoy your programs very much. I often find myself watching as I eat breakfast on Sat or Sun mornings before I get my day going. One concern I have is one I hear from "locals" who have been out here for generations, even to the 18 and 1700's. It's the "Manhattanization" of the east end. Now I haven't watched every show, so I could be off here, but it always seems to be a story about a New York City architect, chef, writer etc and what they're doing on the east end. The old New England "Yankee" names Like Halsey, Bennett, Miller, Rogers etal who were farmers, fishermen out here forever seem to be forgotten. Some of these people have lamented to me personally how the east end seems to turning into what Manhattan people think it SHOULD be, not what it is or was. I know a local bayman, again, whose family goes way back, who has been on the bays (Peconic and Shinnecock) for 60 years. He's 76 and a walking history book with some great stories (and he's still out on the bay!). Again, I DO enjoy Plum tv so keep up the good work. I even purchased that great video about Hampton Bays I first saw on plum. There is a whole culture out here waiting to be explored and saved, if you will. take care - Bill A.
