Sign of the Times: Here Come the Euros

The Euros are Coming
Picture: Guess who's coming to the Hamptons this summer...

Any idea whom the local merchants are expecting to see this summer? The above photo may give you some clues. That's the sign that's affixed to the door of Loaves and Fishes and don't be surprised if you see more of them around town.

Accepting euros at Loaves and Fishes is actually a pretty good idea. You may recall that last summer they were selling lobster salad for $100 a pound. Not too many i-bankers will be handing over the cash this summer for some mayonnaise, diced celery and lobster, but if you’re paying in euros, $100-a-pound lobster salad is a steal.

Euros and the Europeans who spend them are going to be the heroes of the Hamptons this summer. They’re renting and buying the houses, they’ll be buying the lobster salad and they’ll be packing the restaurants and—hopefully—tipping. They’re going to keep us afloat. So when you see them, say: merci, gracias, danke, grazie…
