It's been a great couple of months for Sag Harbor. After celebrating its 300th anniversary all summer and following up in September with Harborfest and the Charity Cup, the marine village partied on this past weekend– all for the cause of keeping it as special as so many people consider it to be– at the Save Sag Harbor benefit.
How do we know so many consider it so? For starters, the event was sold out several days in advance. On top of that, dozens upon dozens of local businesses donated time and food while marquee names such as Carl Bernstein, Nora Ephron, Nick Pileggi, Donna Karan, Lorne Michaels, Nicole Miller and Russell Simmons gave their names and sponsorship to the event, while authors Ken Auletta, Michael Schnayerson, E.L Doctorow and Judith Miller showed up to sign copies of their work.
Meanwhile, the musical genes of Long Island's own Piano Man Billy Joel were the prime attraction when his daughter Alexa Ray Joel took to the cozy stage of the Old Whaler's Church for a performance that had everyone from Christie Brinkley to Roy Scheider on their feet. The purpose of the event was to raise publicity and funds for the ongoing effort to preserve local businesses and culture of the village while protecting it from overdevelopment.
