Roy Scheider 1932-2008

Actor and longtime Hamptons resident, Roy Scheider died on Sunday, February 10, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was 75.

Scheider is probably best known for his role as Chief Brody in Jaws, though he also received two Oscar nominations, one for Best Supporting Actor in The French Connection and one for Best Actor in All That Jazz.

Here in the Hamptons, Scheider was a constant presence. It was the rare morning when you wouldn’t find him having breakfast at the Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton and he was an active and vocal supporter of many of the East End’s charities. He was also one of the co-founders of the Hayground School.

Scheider had lived in Sagaponack for a number of years before recently selling his oceanfront home to Billy Joel. He then moved to Sag Harbor, and was an advocate for Save Sag Harbor. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Seimer and three children.

When longtime East End

When longtime East End resident ROY SCHEIDER passed on, his family lost a treasured loved one; his country lost a gifted stage and screen actor and courageous social crusader; and his community lost a favorite son who was a friend to many and a champion of all. And among those who will sorely miss Roy’s intelligence, sincerity, enthusiasm and kindness are all of us at Hayground School. His commitment, generosity and continual hands-on participation did much to shape the vision for Hayground School from the beginning and helped the school grow into the Hamptons’ most creative institution for progressive nursery-to-8th-grade-education.

Ever since then I've always wanted to meet him. He was such a wonderful actor and very handsome, even as he got a little older. I can't believe he's gone and I will never have to opportunity to meet him. He was the most gorgeous man ever! My sympathy to his wife and children.
