Plum Picks: The Cut

Zuzia Wieczorek
In the world of cars there are Lamborghinis and there are Ferraris. Both are nice, but a Lamborghini is just a little bit nicer. Much the same, in the Hamptons there are beaches, and then there are beaches. And when you’re talking beaches, The Cut ranks as a Lamborghini.

Located at the very end of Flying Point Road in Southampton, on one side you have the Atlantic and on the other you have Mecox Bay. Crowds aren’t bad, sailors, waders, and kiteboarders take action in the bay while swimmers and surfers take to the sea and fishermen surfcast. Along the bay itself there’s an array of incredible architecture and landscape design, which adds a nice touch to the already pleasant view. Parking is slightly limited at The Cut itself—and beware because nothing gives more pleasure to the ticket boys than slapping one under your wiper. However, if you don’t mind the quarter to half-mile walk, parking at Flying Point Beach solves that problem. 40.891721; -72.330177 Plum Picks: The Cut Southampton NY United States

The Cut

Not every Hamptons beach has the junction of a tranquil bay with the Atlantic Ocean.

My Favorite Beach

I have been coming to this beach since I have been a little girl and it is my absolute favorite. I remember when I was younger, my father and I used to go crabbing in the bay and when the cut was opened you could watch them scurrying out towards the ocean. It was a magnificent scene. What is so great about this beach is that when the cut is open it creates a natural and fast moving water ride/slide. If you bring a tube with you, you can start in the bay and gradually build up speed where the bay water swiftly carries you out towards the ocean. Thankfully this slide ends right before the crashing ocean waves due to the interference of shallow sand. This beach is a true beauty of the Hamptons.
