Flags waved and tears of pride streamed down cheeks in Southampton today as hundreds paid homage to those who served and those who still serve our country.Southampton High School's marching band trumpeted festive music as the parade began on Jobs Lane and marched onward to Agawam Park.Master of Ceremonies William A. Frankenbach opened with a moving speech in which he reminded the community that comic book heroes on the silver screen this summer will never compare to heroes residing in the community.Southampton Mayor Mark Epley followed with a tearful proclamation that officially recognized Southampton resident Skyler B. Haynes, who died during service in Iraq in November 2006.
Guest speaker Colonel James Scuttina evoked words of Abraham Lincoln in a touching tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families, before announcing his upcoming retirement in December 2007 after 40 years of service.
The Sweet Adelines choral group lifted spirits with joyous renditions of patriotic tunes such as Yankee Doodle and inspirational hymns such as How Great Thou Art.After the presentation of wreaths in honor of those who died, Frankenbach's granddaughter Kristen Steinke sang God Bless America so powerfully that all in attendance joined her in unison.The ceremony concluded with the raising of Old Glory at the park’s monument. The community gathered around despite the beginning sprinkles of rain that held off long enough for an incredibly beautiful Memorial Day service and parade.How did you spend your holiday?
