With another fluke season now in the books, anglers can focus their attention on bass fishing, which will continue to get better in the coming weeks.
Captain John McMurray of One More Cast Charters says it’s still all about the bluefish in Jamaica Bay. He has heard some solid reports of bonito and false albacore out east, but there’s still none in his neck of the woods. They should show up any day now. The bait concentrations are extraordinary with bay anchovies on the ocean side and peanut bunker on the inside. The bay anchovies are so thick they appear as big copper masses on the surface. So far it’s only bluefish on them, but any day now the hardtails are going find them and it’ll be beautiful. John expects to have a tremendous fall with all this bait. In the meantime, he’s keeping busy throwing poppers to big bluefish up against structure.
Check back every Wednesday for a new report.
