Ken Morse of Tight Lines Tackle in Sag Harbor reports some incredible catches around Montauk. Gary “The Toad” landed a 54-pound striper from the beach on Friday night and another 50-pound fish was caught at Ditch Plains. And the trend continued as a 70-pound striper was landed on a boat at Orient this week. According to Ken, the key seems to be fishing the outgoing tides for both blues and stripers. And keeping with the trend, there are still Bluefish around Jessups and Gardner Island.

The Porgies are rampant in the Peconics. If you can’t catch them under a chum line, Ken suggests taking up beekeeping. Unfortunately, the fluke fishing has slowed down for keepers. There are still a lot of throwbacks, though.
Further west, Captain John McMurray of One More Cast Charters reports that on the ocean-side there have been plenty of schoolies under birds, with a few larger fish in the mix, but not many. There are plenty of large bluefish as well. Jamaica Bay was surprisingly good this week with numerous schools in along the sod banks in super skinny water, which means lots of fun on 7-weights. There are also some scary-large bluefish in the shallows that are next to impossible on a 7-weight. John can’t really tell what the bait is that caused these predators to come back into the bay and into the skinny water, but it is very small. No sign of those black drum this week and if all goes well we should be seeing pelagics soon … hopefully within the next few weeks.
Check back every Wednesday for a new report.
