Hamptons Fishing Report: July 16

Ken Morse at Tight Lines Tackle in Sag Harbor says fishing has been good this week. Some nice fluke are coming out of 80-100 feet of water behind Gardiner Island, with some of them in the 8- to 9-pound range. There are also sea bass in the same area up to 25 inches, and these fish only grow an inch a year … you do the math.

Hamptons Fishing Report: July 16
Captain John McMurray

There was good bass fishing through Sunday on the outgoing tides at The Gut, The Ruins, and The Race, with fish up to 30 pounds. Strangely, anglers at Cedar Point found they were catching bigger porgies under chum lines on slack tide rather than with moving water. Plenty of weakfish in the 18- to 20-inch range are scattered throughout the Western Peconics.

Unfortunately, Ken recounted a bad experience at Shinnecock last week as many anglers left trash and kept undersized fish of all species. He said he was embarrassed to call himself a fisherman if this was the crowd he was associating himself with. This is just a warning if you were thinking about heading that way.

Further west, Captain John McMurray of One More Cast Charters reports that there’s been pretty much nothing but bluefish this week. He’s getting some good ones on poppers up against the sodbanks. And there are some small bass around as well. This is definitely a transition period as there’s a lot of bait off/midshore. He expects to see some bonito and skipjack real soon.

Check back every Wednesday for a new report.
