Hamptons Fishing Report: August 27

Hamptons Fishing Report: August 27
Captain John McMurray

Captain Craig Cantelmo of Van Staal reels reports that the cool nights the past two weeks have the fish starting to move around. Some nice ones have moved into the usual spots on the North Shore. Craig had company this week as Harrison and Connor Cantelmo came all the way from Hermosa Beach, California to play with two dozen striped bass on Friday night. All the fish were caught casting bucktails across structure with some good moving water. Stay with the night tides and fish bucktails that are heavy enough to feel the bottom. We have a great moon coming up in the next two weeks so we should see a lot of fish on the East End.

Ken Morse at Tight Lines Tackle in Sag Harbor says if you want big fish, Sag Harbor is not the place to be right now. The only things that are biting are porgies and small blues.

Fluking has been the best near Montauk and off Shinnecock with some fish pushing the 8-pound mark. And just a reminder, this Sunday is the last day of fluke season. But don’t fret, bass fishing has picked up in the rips in Montauk and at the Orient.

Looking ahead, the bays are loaded with bait so this should set up a tremendous fall run!

Check back every Wednesday for a new report.
