Tower At The End: The Montauk Lighthouse

Even on a partly-to-fully cloudy day, you can see wonders when atop the Montauk Lighthouse. The Camp Hero radar dish is a few miles southwest, and Block Island and Connecticut are a skip across the Sound. The climb of 137 steps brings you to 110.5 feet above the ground and several more above sea level.

It's the furthest east you can go in the Hamptons. Depending on where you are standing and staring, Europe, Africa, or even Massachusetts is the next body of land directly across the water from you. As you look out the giant windows, think of how many ships have been guided by the 19-nautical-mile range of the light. After all, you are standing in the first lighthouse in New York State and the fourth oldest in the entire country.
