If you read Lutha's surf reports this summer, you may recall him frequently alluding to a place he calls "The Ditch." He is talking about Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk.
For many surfers, it is indeed the Mecca of Long Island surfing. Perhaps that's why the Rell Sunn Memorial Surf Contest is always held there, and perhaps that's why some surf superstars such as Kelly Slater have been seen cutting up the seas at the Ditch.
With the most consistent break on the East End, you are almost guaranteed to find rideable waves. Usually, there remains an ease of the waves that make it great for longboarding and perfect for any beginner.
Surfers, however, are not the only fans of The Ditch. The spot is also ideal for surfcasting fishermen and for sunbathing and swimming families. Between the surfers, the fishermen, and the bathers, one would think water-traffic accidents happened all of the time. However, East Hampton Town prohibits surfing within 250 feet of a designated swimming area and is as diligent as enforcing this rule as it is giving out tickets to those who park there without a permit.
