LIPA has agreed (almost) to bury the powerlines
Last week it looked like the power lines were going to be above ground
and we were going to get a new eyesore. But following meetings that ran
late into Friday night, a tentative agreement—pending another town board meeting on Tuesday—was reached to bury the lines.
LIPA will stop any work on the powerlines, which will run from Seven Ponds Road in Southampton to the Bridge-Sag Turnpike, until after a special Town Board meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. At issue is the $8 million dollars it will cost to bury the lines. According to the agreement reached late Friday evening, LIPA will initially cover the cost and then Southampton LIPA customers east of the Shinnecock Canal will pay for the lines being buried over the next 20 years.
This dalliance between LIPA and the town has been as fickle and on-again off-again as a teenage romance, so it still remains to be seen whether or not the deal is sealed following the Town Board meeting tomorrow. But love just might be in the air this time.
