Hamptons

$agaponack: Most Expensive Zip Code

According to Forbes magazine, the most expensive place to purchase a house in the entire country is Sagaponack, where the median price for a home is: $2,787,500 (We’re guessing for that $500 they throw in the light bulbs).

In Sagaponack (11962)– once home to artistic types such as Truman Capote– the multitudes of potato fields have given way to some Nebuchadnezzar-like constructions, such as the largest residential home in America for tycoon Ira Rennart.

The most interesting thing about the Forbes list is that Southampton and East Hampton, for generations the moneyed bastions of the Hamptons, placed way down on the list. Southampton (11968) comes in at 201st, with a
median price of a mere $848,000, while East Hampton (11937) is 267th on the list at $785,000.

And the villages in the Hamptons where the average guy or gal could afford to live (or even the poor guy or gal), such as Amagansett or Quogue and, yes, Sagaponack, have outstripped the former twin pillars of material gentility:

  • Watermill (11976) is 6th, at $2,150,000.
  • Bridgehampton (11932) is 25th, at $1,568,000.
  • Shelter Island Heights (11965) is 27th, at $1,510,000.
  • Amagansett (11930) is 42nd, at $1,350,000.
  • Quogue (11959) is 109th, at $995,000.
  • Westhampton Beach (11778) is 119th, at $970,000.
Incidentally, the first Manhattan zip on the list (10024) is tied with Quogue.
