There's a familiar saying that goes, "Got food? Thank a farmer!" With that in mind, many of us here in the Hamptons owe a great deal of gratitude to Scott Chaskey of Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett. Chaskey's efforts to preserve the farm have saved over 650 acres of its land from the threats of real estate development and protected it for its sole purpose in providing local produce.
In 1983, the Farmer-In-Chief, along with Peconic Land Trust, helped spearhead one of the first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) projects in the country. Today, there are now over 1,500 CSA projects. Through his CSA work with Quail Hill Farm, Chaskey was able to buy in to the farm and share in the risks involved. So far, the risk has been worth it as over 650 acres of the north Amagansett farm have conservation easements on them if they are not already fully-owned. Because of such efforts, all of Quail Hill Farm is used for growing healthy, fresh vegetables and fruits.
