Hamptons: Guides

Fast Facts

The Hamptons (aka The South Fork aka The East End) are the string of towns and villages stretching from Westhampton to Montauk on the eastern most end of Long Island approximately 100 miles from New York City.

The Weather

Much like New England, the saying, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute,” applies to the Hamptons as well. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Peconic and Gardiner’s Bays to the north, the Hamptons will experience temperatures in the high nineties during the summer to snowstorms in the winter that will occasionally dump a foot or more of snow. During the fall and winter temperatures tend to be cool, sometimes chilly, and occasionally downright freezing. If you’re planning a visit, your best bet is check our weather page and pack accordingly.

Transportation

Though there is public transportation in the Hamptons, if you’re heading east you’re definitely going to want to have a car to get the most out of your time here. For short weekend trips it is possible to take the Long Island Railroad, Hampton Jitney or Hampton Luxury Liner, though once here your movements will be limited to the town your in or how much you’re willing to spend on taxis. Renting a bike is another option, though again, you’ll be limited to the town you’re staying in. Of course, if you're a high roller you can ge here via helicopter from New York City or just fly your private jet into East Hampton Airport.

Emergencies/Medical

There are no 24-hour pharmacies in the Hamptons, though King Kullen in Bridgehampton is open 24-hours and has most of the over-the-counter medicines you might need on short notice. During regular business hours, there are Rite Aids in Southampton and Bridgehampton and CVS pharmacy in East Hampton. Should you require emergency medical care, Southampton Hospital is the only hospital in the area.

The Essentials

Whether you ran out of gas or you need to get a shirt pressed the day before a wedding, you can find the numbers you might need in our essential numbers listing.

Fun Facts

The Hamptons are among the oldest towns in America and were settled over 400 years ago. A few of those founding families’ descendants still live here in the Hamptons.

East Hampton was voted America’s Most Beautiful Village in a National Geographic poll.

One of America’s largest homes sits on the ocean in Sagaponack. It’s over 100,000 square feet in area, features 2 bowling alleys, a 120-seat movie theater and over 40 bathrooms.

The most expensive residential real estate transaction occurred this past summer in the Hamptons when 40 acres on the famed Further Lane were sold for $103 million.
