Smile, you're on camera!

Captain John McMurray

Captain Craig Cantelmo from Van Staal reels reports that Montauk is having the best fall run in 6-8 years with blitzing bass, bluefish and albacore showing up along both the north and south sides. These fish are all feeding on “rain bait” and will be most active during the daylight hours this week and next.

Craig suggests planning a night trip around the new moon later this month to catch a fish of a lifetime!

Ken Morse at Tight Lines Tackle in Sag Harbor has also heard reports of “insane” fishing at Montauk. Anglers fishing eels over the weekend reported catching fish in the 35-pound class one right after another. The fish feeding on the surface are averaging between 26- and 36-inches. Ken also reports that the bass and bluefish have been ravenous both at the Plum Gut and the rip behind Gardner Island. Fishing should continue to be good through the beginning of December barring any major changes.

Blackfish season got underway recently and the fishing has been good with fish up to 9 pounds taken in 20- to 60-feet of water on the northeast side of Plum.

Captain John McMurray of One More Cast Charters in Jamaica Bay says albie fishing has been really good with loads of bay anchovies around. And the bass fishing is getting better every day but there’s still not much going on in the bay as everything is on the ocean side. John expects that will change as the water cools.

Now is a great time to be out on the water!

Gotcha!

Captain John McMurray

Now is the time to head to your favorite East End surf location according to Captain Craig Cantelmo from Van Staal reels. This weekend in Montauk found hundreds of expert to novice anglers on the North Side casting bucktails in an angry sea. The recent storms pushed six- to eight-foot swells up against the beach and also pushed the bait right into the wash. Now — with the weather beginning to calm — is the time to get out and fish a few tides a week. Although Montauk has been a day time bite, this week will see the largest fish being taken at night.

Remember to be safe when you go out, and if you’re fishing in the rocks be sure to have a pair of Korkers that have carbide spikes on the bottom so that you don’t slip. Also, if you’re fishing in waders make sure that you wear a belt around your waist to avoid filling up your waders if you take an unexpected wave over the top!

Love that shimmer!

Captain John McMurray

Montauk has been on fire according to Captain Craig Cantelmo from Van Staal reels. The bay anchovies are bringing in loads of gamefish. And the surf scene has been very good during the day with big schools of both striped bass and bluefish pushing the bay anchovies into the surf line. Small sluggos and bucktails are the best bet.

Look for the down side of the moon to allow some of the larger fish to start moving into the surf zone later this week. If you haven’t gotten into the surf yet this season, it’s time to head to Montauk and see what the largest biomass movement in the Atlantic looks like!

Captain John McMurray of One More Cast Charters in Jamaica Bay says he’s been sticking albies for about a week now, although it pretty much shut off with Saturday’s ground swell and east wind. Fortunately, the mullet are still around and as a result the bass fishing on the breaking sandbars has been going off. Be careful though, it can be sketchy getting into these areas for a cast with all the swell.

Check back every Wednesday for a new report.

That's one happy angler. And one unhappy fish.

Captain John McMurray

Ken Morse at Tight Lines Tackle in Sag Harbor says fishing in Montauk remains fantastic and there’s no sign of it slowing down. Feel free to sleep in, too, as the late afternoon bite seems to be much better than the morning bite as of late.

Off shore, anglers are catching some big tuna. The Seamonster hauled in a big eye over 200 pounds and a nice yellowfin on Tuesday. And there are plenty others being caught out there, so fish on!

Check back every Wednesday for a new report.
