Captain John McMurray
Captain Craig Cantelmo from Van Staal reels reports that Montauk is having the best fall run in 6-8 years with blitzing bass, bluefish and albacore showing up along both the north and south sides. These fish are all feeding on “rain bait” and will be most active during the daylight hours this week and next.
Craig suggests planning a night trip around the new moon later this month to catch a fish of a lifetime!
Ken Morse at Tight Lines Tackle in Sag Harbor has also heard reports of “insane” fishing at Montauk. Anglers fishing eels over the weekend reported catching fish in the 35-pound class one right after another. The fish feeding on the surface are averaging between 26- and 36-inches. Ken also reports that the bass and bluefish have been ravenous both at the Plum Gut and the rip behind Gardner Island. Fishing should continue to be good through the beginning of December barring any major changes.
Blackfish season got underway recently and the fishing has been good with fish up to 9 pounds taken in 20- to 60-feet of water on the northeast side of Plum.
Captain John McMurray of One More Cast Charters in Jamaica Bay says albie fishing has been really good with loads of bay anchovies around. And the bass fishing is getting better every day but there’s still not much going on in the bay as everything is on the ocean side. John expects that will change as the water cools.
Now is a great time to be out on the water!
