Holiday Shopping: Let the Games Begin

Plum's Tracy Mitchell heads out to shop—for herself. Yes, she has plenty of things on her list, but she also has some good advice and stumbles on some great finds for someone on your list.

Best of Summer '07: Videos

In no particular order, here comes the video...

All anyone could talk about at the beginning of the summer was the Social Concert Series and the tickets that cost $15,000 for five concerts. Bryan Boyhan went to the first concertPrince, no less—and...he actually had a good time.

Chris got totally tongue tied by supermodel Selita Ebanks while Olivia got giggly with model/polo player Nacho Figureas.

We likes to party—and so does Russell Simmons. The man must have thrown, hosted or been at 217 parties this summer. Checkout his annual Art for Life benefit where Olivia chatted up Forrest Whitaker. Olivia also talked to Russell about his new book. Basically, Olivia and Russell hung out all summer.

While all about you are losing their heads, try a little fishing. There's something calming about waiting for the bite.

Just a couple miles away is this little island called Block Island. They used to send criminals there. So we sent Plum's John Birdsong. To be nice, we gave him a video camera. Which he used to shoot a lot of video of sailboats during Block Island Race Week. It was good stuff so we let him come back to the Hamptons.

You know what's cool? Opening a bottle of champagne with a giant knife.

Chris got all the good assignments. Especially when he got to hang out with the Beatles in India. (Full disclosure: that's a total lie. He didn't get to hang out with the Beatles in India. But he did interview a guy who hung out with the Beatles in India.)

Who knew socialites could surf? We had no idea and even after we were told they can surf we didn't believe it. Then we watched this video. And we learned that Fabiola Beracasa can wakeboard too. Will wonders never cease?

It wasn't all fun and games. Every once in awhile we tackled a few weighty matters. Like when former Editor in Chief of Time Inc., Norman Pearlstine came on to talk about the current state of journalism. Serious stuff. And just for the record, Carl Bernstein is no lightweight either.

Those crazy kids, what will they think of next? Not content to lay on a surfboard and paddle with their hands, now they want to stand on a surfboard and use a canoe paddle. Next thing you know, they'll be riding surfboards attached to kites.

Against all odds, Drew found poetry in pastry. The Gentle Donut, his tribute to the artery clogging magic of the fresh donut brought tears to our eyes and the comfort of assured future business to cardiac specialists everywhere.

Who will win? Artists? Writers? Neither? Both? Like a night at the opera, this year's Artists Writers Game was too much drama. But it was all for a good cause so try and suffer through Mort Zuckerman's pitching and Christie Brinkley's batting and place your bets.

Judith Miller did not start the War in Iraq.

Plum went to the dogs this summer—literally. Dog of the Month was the contest to win and we had two very deserving winners complemented by two hilarious "Dogumentaries." We're still trying to figure out if Amber is a dog or a diva and we know that Sophie proves the maxim that a dog is a man's best friend.

Say it with me girls, Super Saturday 10! Shop til you drop. Olivia talked to everyone from the Giulianis to Beth Ostrosky. Then she bought presents for all of her coworkers at Plum...or she should have.

Formula for TV magic: 1 Intern + 1 Camera + 1 Microphone + Hundreds of Odd Questions= Man on the Street. That's all it takes. And we were able to answer tough questions like, If you were a firework, what kind would you be? And, What is Fashion? Or, Do you wish you knew magic like Harry Potter?

Just give Michael Moore a mic and he'll give you an interview.

Sometimes in the Hamptons there are too many houses. If you're rich enough, you just give the extra houses on your property away. That's what happened here.

Interns: sometimes they talk to horses.

Plum Picks: Sag Harbor Variety

Fill in the blank here: I came out to the Hamptons for the weekend and I forgot___________.

If this has happened to you, then there is one place that can fill in the blank no matter what you forgot. The Sag Harbor 5&10 has—literally—everything. And we're not using literally lightly here. They have eveything you could possibly need. We took a wander around the store and this is what we found in under two minutes:

Ribbon, sailor hats, Sag Harbor t-shirts, plain t-shirts, whale t-shirts (and plenty more t-shirts), bedding, cigarettes, an assortment of coffee mugs, shower curtains, potato chips, styrofoam coolers and plastic coolers, nerf footballs, a Spiderman doll riding an ATV, Play Doh, fabric, coat hangars, giant packages of toilet paper, pirate flags, throw rugs, beach chairs, oven mitts, board games (all the classics plus some we hadn't heard of), curtain rods, a large assortment of candy, toaster ovens, laundry baskets, socks, plastic flowers, pillows, frying pans, spray starch, nail clippers, pens, cards, dental floss...

We could go on, but you get the idea. They've got it all. So the next time you're wandering through Sag Harbor, stop in and get whatever you need.

Plum Picks: Dylan's Candy Bar

For the sweettooths (or is it sweetteeth?) in the audience, we're happy to report that Dylan's Candy Bar in East Hampton is open and doing a brisk business. Dylan sat down on MNN a couple weeks ago and described the new store as a "mini-bar." Yes, it is smaller than her New York flagship, but she's managed to pack plenty of candy into the shop.

There was no shortage of customers in line when we wandered in and the sweet smell of candy and the bright colors were almost enough to give us a toothache. (We can recommend the Chocolate Clodhoppers.)

See what Dylan had to say when she came on the show below. (Or even better, just head over to her East Hampton outpost and see what kind of sweets she's compiled for your tasting pleasure.)

Runway to Runway

Let's be honest here: it's the Hamptons, and the best of everything is almost good enough. Last week, Departures magazine, American Express, Flexjet, Aston Martin and a host of other sponsors held what can only be described as the perfect Hamptons afternoon at Westhampton airport—perfect that is, if you like the good life (and seriously, who doesn't?).

Private jets are becoming almost de rigueur for luxe travel these days and Flexjets offered the opportunity to come and kick the proverbial tires. Round that out with some of the best cars, fashion and food to be found, and we almost didn't get our correspondent Chris O'Connor to come back to work. Checkout the video and you'll see why.

Super Saturday: Gird Your Loins

Picture this: gaggles of women running hoi polloi around a field ripping off their clothes and diving into piles of designer wear, all of which is on sale. It's about as close to the Roman gladiator games as you can get in modern times except victory is measured in savings on DKNY dresses and 7 for All Mankind jeans. And best of all, it's all for a good cause.

Super Saturday 10, which benefits The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund,  was held at Nova's Ark in Bridgehampton Saturday, July 27. If you're not going, avoid Scuttle Hole Road as traffic gets nightmarish and focus on the road is replaced by a feverish building of anticipation. If you are going, get there on time as the deals go fast.

Beyond Style with Stefano Tonchi

Every few weeks, when you open the Sunday New York Times, out falls a thick issue of T magazine. Edited by Stefano Tonchi, the magazine is in essence about fashion and lifestyle, but it tackles the subject with a larger lens and more discriminating eye than most publications. As the magazine demonstrates, style can be found everywhere—from the kitchen to the far-flung destinations covered by the magazine.

Stella's Stellar Antiques

Your shopping experience in the Hamptons is not exclusively limited to boutiques and shops on the Main Street of any village. That's because, almost every weekend, an extravagant antiques show comes to town to get your buying bugs biting.

This weekend it's the Stella Shows' Antiques & Design at the Bridgehampton Historical Society. It becomes quite clear that this is not your average antiques show when you hear the walkie-talkie static muffle beneath the show organizers' voices as they communicate direction and set up. Meanwhile, outsider art, industrial design, and rarities you'd expect to find at a Ma and Pa antiques sale on the front lawn are all keeping cool under the big white tents, as one potential buyer after another peruses one table to the next.

Plum got a close-up look at several items this weekend during the live broadcast of the MorningNoon&Night Show, and we highly suggest you head down there before that fancy item that would look great in your home is gone.
