Gas Prices: A Love Letter to Fred Thiele

Sag Harbor Gas Prices

Please allow us to quote a line from last week’s East Hampton Star: “State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. has asked the state attorney general to prosecute wholesale distributors of gasoline for what he called ‘discriminatory pricing practices’ that appear to violate antitrust laws.”

We’ve never met Fred Thiele, we didn’t vote for him in the last election and our entire knowledge of the man is derived from local newspaper articles, but we love the guy. Seriously. It’s high time someone came along and cried foul on the gas stations out here. They’re pirates. They rape and pillage indiscriminately and with disdain. Three miles away on the North Fork gas prices are 35 to 50 cents cheaper. Now by our calculations, the North Fork and the South Fork are pretty much equidistant from the Middle East, Venezuela, Alaska, Russia and everywhere else they produce oil. So why is it so much more expensive if you happen to get off at exit 70?

The gouging has gone on long enough. Thank you Fred Thiele for stepping up to the plate on this one. We’re ready to storm the barricades with you. Meet you at the Mobil in Amagansett and it’s on.

Independent Article Sparks Obama Controversy

Independent Article Sparks Obama Controversy

Sometimes newspapers publish something stupid. On rare occasions, they publish something offensive. But The Independent's editor, Rick Murphy, took things to a whole new level this week in his column "Low Tidings." Low isn't even in the ballpark to describe this one.

Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi continues to attack current trends in modern politics. In Part II of a multi-part interview, he discuss the inner-workings of Congress and how this governing body actually works with Anthony Gray.

Matt Taibbi on the 2008 Election

Are Republicans or Democrats more entertaining to cover? Does being a Red Sox fan instead of a Yankees fan influence a presidential candidate's elect-ability? Rolling Stone writer Matt Taibbi can answer such questions. You may have seen him recently on Real Time with Bill Maher and The Colbert Report, now you can see him right here in a multi-part series. In this clip, Taibbi discusses both sides of the aisle of the 2008 presidential election with Anthony Gray.

Nail Biter: Election Results Are In... And Close

In East Hampton, Bill McGintee is ahead by 109 votes. In Southampton...well, it's still anybody's guess as to who is going to win. The word "court" has been uttered. It's Florida 2000 all over again. Sort of. Brian Boyhan, editor and publisher of the Sag Harbor Express, talks politics with Chris O'Conner.
