Valentine's Day in the Hamptons

Valentine's Day in the Hamptons

Excessive commercials touting chocolates and diamonds for Valentine's Day suggest you know what you're getting your loved one. But we'd like to suggest where you take him/her for the special celebration (or just yourself should that be the matter).

Single? Dating? Committed? Engaged? Married? It doesn't matter. Valentine's Day in the Hamptons will not be a, figuratively speaking, cold night.

Til Death Do You Part
Married for a year, 10 years, 30 years etc, renewing your vows is the tenderest way to commemorate the occasion. The view of the Atlantic at Gurney's Inn adds a nice touch. Ceremony begins at 5 p.m. on Valentine's Day.

Longest-Lip-Locking
You can prove your love is the strongest at the Longest Kiss Competition, also at Gurney's. Reserving room for potentially fierce competition, the contest begins Saturday, February 16 at 5 p.m.

Let the Music Do the Talking
A good love song can enhance the ambiance of an evening with your Valentine, and it can also fill the audible space as you gaze into each other's eyes. Local legends provide the music live at Della Femina Restaurant, as Jane Hastay on piano, Peter Martin Weiss on bass and vocalist Terry Struble perform Love Songs: A Valentine's Day Treat.

Eat to Your Heart's Content
There's prix fixe and then there's more hearty prix fixe and dining specials. Take The Plaza Cafe, for instance: a four-course meal begins at 5:30 p.m. on Valentine's Day with choices such as pumpkin-lobster bisque and Jurgielewicz Farms free range duck. Meanwhile, Matto is giving every couple a free Moet split bottle, and is offering injected Grand Mariner chocolate dipped strawberries. Fresno is including a complimentary glass of Prosecco and house-made chocolate truffles with dessert.

Dine By Duration
A newly-dating couple for a few months seeks a different date than say the married couple forever. Manners, price, and ambiance are all aspects at play in this matter. Here's a categorized list:

  • Married for decades- A grand relationship deserves a grand evening. So get a table at the American Hotel, perhaps the most elegant of dining establishments.
  • Dating for years- You're searching for something special, but aren't treating the day as the sole romantic one of the year. So go to Almond, it's hip and it's delicious fun.
  • Just got together- The first Valentine's Day should be a memorable one. Go to the 1770 House. The privacy and intimacy of the downstairs dining makes for a beautiful experience.
  • Single and happy- Sen, Suki Zuki and World Pie are filled every night with as much delicious food and drinks as there are interesting people. Their chic atmospheres are ideal for eating alone, but not lonely, and networking with the locals and socialites.

A Very Kennedy Christmas

Among the things you'll find in Hamptons-regular Caroline Kennedy's new book, A Family Christmas, are:

  • A letter from Groucho Marx about his bad luck with holiday tipping, recipes from the kitchen of Martha Washington and the lyrics to 'Christmas in Hollis' by rappers Run-DMC.

Christmas Crimes: Who Stole Baby Jesus?

Baby Jesus is missing

Christmas related crimes are skyrocketing in the Hamptons area and residents are shaking their heads in disgust. First, there was the case of the stolen Christmas lights in East Hampton and now Baby Jesus has been stolen from the manger scene in Sag Harbor.

While walking down Main Street in Sag Harbor the other night, we were shocked to see that the idyllic scene that usually features Mary, Joseph and the Wise Men (which sounds like the name of a '60s folk band), had been vandalized and that Mary and Joseph knelt reverentially in front of...nothing. NO baby Jesus was there for them to look upon.

Who would do such a thing? Steal a sheep, steal a wise man even, but don't steal Baby Jesus. That's just not right. We'll be following this story closely. But we've already lost the Christmas spirit.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

What do aliens, pirates, political figures and sea creatures all have in common? They are all pumpkins. This year The Bridgehampton Lion's Club Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest had an amazing turn out. Participants enter their pumpkins in up to three categories, and this year the judging was harder than ever. But you'll see as Plum's Chris O'Connor takes you on a tour of the scariest, funniest and just plain craziest pumpkins around, its not about who wins, its about carving a great pumpkin.

Last Minute Candy Fix

Happy Halloween. Are your candy baskets ready yet? If not, we've made sure to take the time to sample some goods for you and make some recommendations.

If You Live in East Hampton Town:

Your two best bets are Fudge n Stuff on The Circle in Montauk and Dylan's Candy Bar on Main Street in East Hampton Village. The drive out to The End to get to Fudge n Stuff is worth it, especially if you are an avid chocolate eater. Legend has it that a man who is allergic to chocolate once entered the Fudge n Stuff store and immediately went through a sneezing fit due to the significant aura of chocolate in the air. When the attack subsided, he still wolfed some some fudge and was fine. There must be something magical in it.

Meanwhile, Dylan's has perhaps the greatest chocolate pretzels ever made on the East End. The pleasant, extra touch is the mini M&Ms topped on the savory milk chocolate and crunchy pretzels. As you may or may not know, Dylan of Dylan's Candy Bar is the daughter of designer Ralph Lauren. Imagine the delicately crafted and creatively designed fabrics of his clothing magically transformed into works of candy, and you have good reason to stop by the store.

If You Live in Southampton Town:

The Fudge Company on Jobs Lane in Southampton Village has your chocolate candy, fruity candy, chewy candy, and bizarre candy. How bizarre? As bizarre as a cheeseburger made of marshmallows. It looks just like a cheeseburger and feels just like a McDonald's concoction, yet it tastes kind of fruity. The bun tastes like strawberry, the cheese tastes like Starburst/Skittles orange, and we're not sure what the meat tastes like, but it's not meaty. Also in the store were Cow Tales (think Tootsie Roll meets Ho Hos- chocolate chewy candy roll filled with cream), the classic Stallion Candy Cigarettes (but don't use them around kids because of secondhand sugar highs) and an entire yard stick of gum, which is very handy to have around when the flavor of your chew fades.

Going Nuts is another Southampton Village candy store on Jobs Lane, but it wasn't open yesterday afternoon so we can't tell you about, what we assume is, its wide array of candy.

In fact, because the Fudge Company was the only candy-specific store that was open the day before Halloween, we were forced to expand our research to King Kullen and Rite Aid in Bridgehampton. While there, we learned a couple of interesting bits.

First, there's such a thing as healthy chocolate (we think). Rich with antioxidants, we're familiar with the whole craze about dark chocolate being not so bad for you. King Kullen has plenty of dark chocolate, and much of it is organic. How much healthier does the word organic make chocolate? We don't know and we don't care, but we know it's healthier than most candy so therefore we draw the conclusion that it's pretty good for you on top of good tasting.

Another fascinating discovery we made was that Rite Aid is the only place that sells Candy Corn. Imagine that? One of the most popular staples of Halloween candy could only be found at a franchised pharmacy. Because Rite Aid was so plentiful with its variety of candy, we took an extra look around and found these delicious candies called Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers Bars, and Kit Kat Bars. We heard lots of great things about these items in the past, and after sampling them around the office could not agree more. The Peanut Butter Cups had a rich compound of peanut butter that blended perfectly with the mass-produced milk chocolate. Meanwhile, the peanuts, nougat, caramel and chocolate combination of the Snickers Bar was packed with multiple flavors that danced on the palate like a ballerina. Finally, the Kit Kat Bar went down too easily because of its light and crispy texture beneath the chocolate. The wafers never fill you up, which makes them all the more dangerous.

Our sweet tooth is still aching. Got any recommendations for a cure? Tells us by posting a comment below.
