No Hamptons for Heather

Tragically, Heather Mills will not be getting Paul McCartney's East Hampton home in the divorce settlement. As the judge in the case stated, "'In my judgment, her case overlooks the fact that all of the husband’s properties were acquired before their marriage, in some cases long before…I see no justification whatever for the homes on Long Island or in New York City.'" Poor Heather. Perhaps that's why she was compelled to pour a glass of water over Sir Paul's lawyer's head at the close of the trial. Heather will just have to make do with the $50 million or so she got in the settlement. Newsday has the full story as well as a chronicle of Paul McCartney's time spent in the Hamptons.

The Day the Music Died: No $15,000 Tickets this Summer

You're going to have to find someplace else to spend $15,000 this summer (assuming you still have $15,000). The Social Concert Series, which last summer brought Billy Joel, James Taylor, Dave Matthews, Tom Petty and Prince to the Ross School, is cancelling plans for their 2008 series. Something about losing $18 million on last year's concerts seems to have put a damper on the affair. Coupled with the fact that the people rich enough to buy tickets to the series also had the connections to get the tickets free, this business model was doomed from day one. Keeping a stiff upper lip is concert organizer Joe Meli who assures all that he is working on something even bigger for this summer. $16,000 tickets?

Is There a Doctor in the House?

Seems like TV viewers can't get enough of the Hamptons. First the Real Housewives of New York City has been a smash hit for Bravo and now USA Networks is planning a show called Royal Pains, which is about "a young doctor who, after losing everything based on one principled decision in the ER, takes a weekend trip to the Hamptons and ends up reviving his career as a concierge doctor to the rich—though he's not exactly happy about it." Fire up the laugh track and get ready to see a lot of angst about botched plastic surgeries, botox and gout.

UPDATE: Tiger Woods DOES NOT Buy Gin Lane Estate

Tiger Woods

OOPS! It looks as if we were too hasty jumping on the New York Post's report that Tiger Woods bought a $65 million, six-acre estate on Gin Lane in Southampton, labeled the "By the Sea" mansion.

We were making plans to get cameras ready on the Shinnecock Canal to spot the icon's 155-foot-long yacht and were planning to stick to Southampton Village roads in anticipation of a potential Tiger-spotting route between his alleged house and Shinnecock Hills.

But a new report from Newsday has us stopping the blitz:

Beate Moore of Sotheby's International Realty continued to cite a strict confidentiality agreement in not revealing the parties involved, but says she is "stunned" at the rumor that Woods was the purchaser of the property. "It is hilarious...I don't know where this comes from," she said, adding, "there's not an ounce of truth to it."

Sigh

Back to the office.

Broker Says Tiger Woods Isn't Buyer of $65 Million Home [Newsday]

Artist Profile: Dan Rizzie

Blank canvas: check. Inspiration from the Hamptons: check. Artist Dan Rizzie's paintings are by no means simple. But when you listen to him discuss how he creates his paintings, it sounds like a simple process (though it isn't, he's just that good).

Westhampton Estate Sets New Water Mark

Quantuck Bay Estate

A new listing in Westhampton Beach is making the upper echelon stand up, take notice and even consider crossing the Shinnecock canal -- a $39 million historic estate. “Where else can you find 10 acres on the water in a Stanford White era home with 16,000 square feet?” asks exclusive agent Marcia Altman with Brown Harris Stevens. At a recent open house for a few select brokers there was one word whispered about, “Gatsby.” West Egg has clearly arrived.

So Much For that Idea: Copters Wander Astray Already

Just a very brief note here. It’s March. The new routes that the helicopters would be flying to prevent bothering the locals and residents near East Hampton Airport that were set in place 2 months ago are already being ignored. This is going to get ugly. We're taking bets on how long it is before serious legislation is put into place that will severely curb the number of helicopters flying into the airport and the routes that they can place. Click through and name your date. Closest to the correct date gets a free flight back to the city.

Gas Prices: A Love Letter to Fred Thiele

Sag Harbor Gas Prices

Please allow us to quote a line from last week’s East Hampton Star: “State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. has asked the state attorney general to prosecute wholesale distributors of gasoline for what he called ‘discriminatory pricing practices’ that appear to violate antitrust laws.”

We’ve never met Fred Thiele, we didn’t vote for him in the last election and our entire knowledge of the man is derived from local newspaper articles, but we love the guy. Seriously. It’s high time someone came along and cried foul on the gas stations out here. They’re pirates. They rape and pillage indiscriminately and with disdain. Three miles away on the North Fork gas prices are 35 to 50 cents cheaper. Now by our calculations, the North Fork and the South Fork are pretty much equidistant from the Middle East, Venezuela, Alaska, Russia and everywhere else they produce oil. So why is it so much more expensive if you happen to get off at exit 70?

The gouging has gone on long enough. Thank you Fred Thiele for stepping up to the plate on this one. We’re ready to storm the barricades with you. Meet you at the Mobil in Amagansett and it’s on.

Big Duck Gets More Cosmetic Work Than Upper East Side Matron

You may remember a few months back when the Big Duck—a national historic monument—was moved from its usual nesting spot to Flanders. Not a long move, but a big event nonetheless. Now there's more talk about Big Duck improvements. They're thinking of putting in a park and sprucing up the buildings around the Big Duck. Realize this is a big process requiring many phases (as Linda Kabot put it), so don't get your hopes up yet. But people love their duck, so expect this story to be capturing headlines for months to come.

Are You on the List?

Southampton's Most Wanted

In the Hamptons, you’re nobody if you’re not on the list. Lists are the means by which Hamptonites measure their relative success—or lack thereof. Ahead, a brief and highly inaccurate chronicle of the lists of the Hamptons:

Most Wanted List: This past week the Southampton Village Police released their Most Wanted List. It pretty much goes without saying that this is NOT one of the many lists in the Hamptons that you want to be on. Granted, it’s not as bad as being on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, but seriously, this is one that you want to skip.

Nick & Toni’s Saturday Night Reservation List: This is a very good list to be on because A) it means you can afford dinner at Nick & Toni’s and B) it means you have enough social standing to actually get on the list. Pretty much the opposite of the “Most Wanted List.”

Hamptons Magazine’s “The List”:
This is one of the older lists in the Hamptons and, if you’ve paid any attention to it, you may be slightly perplexed by its methodology. That’s because there really isn’t one. It’s the most arbitrary list out there, though to make the cut it helps if you advertise or have appeared on Page Six within the past 6 months.

Pink Elephant Guest List:
You’re a model. We know, it’s not that hard to figure out. You’re out here with a pack of other models and you’ll be getting free drinks from the I-bankers at table seven who are dropping $700 on a $40 bottle of Grey Goose (three bottle minimum). Have a good time.

Sag Harbor Dock Space List:
Being on this list is a mixed bag. It means that you achieved a level of wealth that affords you the ability to purchase an enormous yacht, but you still don’t have quite enough clout to guarantee yourself a space at the dock during those popular weekends like the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Tough it out though, because no one is shedding a tear for you.

Montauk Charter Boat Fishing List:
You’ve woken up at 4 a.m., dragged the kids out of bed and are headed down to the docks for a little party boat fishing—half a day, of course, so you can be on the beach in the afternoon with mom. You’ll probably catch something, which the kids will then refuse to eat, but it will be a nice memory of summer fun and you’ll have the ubiquitous “kid-with-a-fish picture” to go with the experience.

Polo: Just about everyone has been on this list at one time or another. It’s exclusive in the way that King Kullen is exclusive. One thing to note though is the difference between those under the tent, and those under the celebrity tent. There’s making it, and then there’s really making it.

Benefit Committee List: You’re doing good work. You’re helping a cause. And really dahling, it’s all about giving back. You like to lunch, sip Southsides and talk about the benefit committee that you are on. (See also Hamptons magazine’s List.)

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club: You’re a dreamer, but you have to keep hope alive. You’re dying to play that course, and maybe, if you know someone, and have the right breeding, and the wallet to match, you might, 10 years from now, be accepted as a member. If you do, please call because we’d love to play that course too.

Did we miss any? Let us know below.

Channing Daughters: Greatest. Winery. Ever.*

Does Punch Sulzberger have a stake in Channing Daughters Winery? We’re starting to think so. This weekend’s headline in The Time’s: “Excitement in a Bottle”. The Times isn’t known for hyperbole, so when they throw down statements like that—especially after so recently saying things like this—you have to wonder what’s going on.

“Its grape-growing, grape-buying and experimental cellar work has made Channing Daughters the East End’s most cutting-edge estate. Its winemaker, James Christopher Tracy, who is also a partner, brings his sensibility as a trained chef to blends that are exciting when they succeed and interesting even when they do not.”

Translation: good even when they’re not so good. Wine writing tends toward the floral, so rather than critique we’ll just pluck the choicest phrases from the vine (sorry, had to be done):

“appetite-whetting … lightly herbaceous and delivers a kiwi-like bite … though disjointed … provocative … splashy, spicy and raisiny … meditation wine, designed to woo the intellect as well as the digestive system … a liquid fruit salad … “

Limit of two bottles per walk-in customer so move fast.

Tower At The End: The Montauk Lighthouse

The Montauk Lighthouse

Even on a partly-to-fully cloudy day, you can see wonders when atop the Montauk Lighthouse. The Camp Hero radar dish is a few miles southwest, and Block Island and Connecticut are a skip across the Sound. The climb of 137 steps brings you to 110.5 feet above the ground and several more above sea level.

Hamptons Restaurant Week Preview: Legends

In addition to the spectacular water views, Legends Restaurant in New Suffolk has two restaurants under one roof. In one, the sports fans eat their burgers and drink their beer while watching the many screens. In the other, the fine dining provided by Chef Mike Reilly tantalizes the tastebuds. Try the Asian bouillabaisse. Take an exclusive look at one of the many participants in the upcoming Hamptons Restaurant Week.
