United States Representative Tim Bishop

United States Representative Tim Bishop is a 12th generation Hamptonite born in Southampton, and a Mariner alum who received his Master's Degree from Long Island University. Before elected to represent New York's 1st District in 2002, he was Provost of Southampton College since 1986. Within his first 5 years in office, the League of Conservation Voters gave Bishop a 100% rating on environmental issues and the National Education Association gave him a 92% rating on education. Needless to say, he's worked hard to make the Hamptons an even better place to live.

East Hampton Records Most Expensive Real Estate Sale

$103 million for a residential property? Not even with a house on it? That’s what various sources say financier Ron Baron is about to pay for the 40-acre oceanfront property in East Hampton owned by oil heiress Adelaide De Menil Carpenter. Forget about breaking the previous Hamptons real estate record of $45 million (a Wainscott purchase by pharmaceutical CEO Stewart Rahr in ’04); this sale would be a national record for a residential property, surpassing the $70 million shelled out for the Palm Beach estate of Ron Perelman, who also has digs here.

Plum Picks: Indoor Sports

Sigh... Clouds and rain are on the Hamptons' horizon this weekend. One forecast after another appears to predict the same crummy conditions. We've prepared for this, albeit hesitantly, and would like to share a few indoor sports ideas with you to help you pull through the precipitation.

Summer Punch: Believe it or not, boxing is coming to the Hamptons. In fact it's a charity event at VFW Post 5350 on Montauk Highway in Quogue this Saturday night. Sanctioned by USA Boxing, the event won't seem that brutal once you realize it benefits disabled veterans of the war in Iraq. Doors open at 5 p.m. the first bout begins at 6 p.m, and the pugilism for proceeds goes on until 11 p.m. Call 631-653-9898 for more.

For The Wee Ones: There's no experience like a day at home with a bunch of kids while it rains inside. With that in mind we know Wainscott's got two alternatives with the Indoor Play Gym at the Country School on Industrial Road (631-537-2255) and the Indoor Tennis Club on Daniel's Hole Road (631-537-8012). You can also burn off their energy through creative brain draining at the wacky and wondrous Children's Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton, the Golden Eagle art workshops in East Hampton, and painting your own pottery at Follow Your Art in Southampton. Or just find em something to keep em busy at Stevenson's Toys, also in Southampton.

Playtime For Adults: With the recent, exciting news about wineries having more freedom to sell and distribute their libation, designate yourself a driver and mosey on over to a local vineyard. While it pours outside, wet your whistle inside at Wolffer, Channing Daughters or Duckwalk. When you're done, stop by East End Books for a friendly check-up on your marriage with Rabbi Michael Shevak, who will discuss his book Adam & Eve: Marriage Secrets From The Garden of Eden.

Going Nowhere: For those of you that just can't make it out (by choice, against will, or by rain-induced laziness), we have two games that a few of us Plummers play when we're not working or at the beach. First is Hamptonizing your Monopoly board. A couple of stickers or index cards, mixed with creative labeling, and you have a local Monopoly showdown on your hands. What becomes Boardwalk? Ira Rennert's estate? Two Trees Farm? There are seven train stations in the Hamptons, which ones take up the four RR spots on the board? Instead of paying $75 for luxury tax, maybe it's $50 for landscaping fees. You get the picture. Or, if you must execute some form of athleticism, build your own indoor mini golf course. It's easier than you think, hear us out. A simple piece of cardboard or a tissue box, attached to a broomstick or whiffle ball bat creates an indoor-friendly and safe putter. Roll up some duct tape, or borrow your neighbor's Ping Pong balls and you have your equipment (see above). Now all you need are your homemade holes (dixie cups or disposable bowls turned upside down with a whole cut in it work best). How the terrain is created is up to you. A clean patch of kitty litter makes a nice sand trap (that is if you don't get your own sand already). Let the tile or wood panels be the fairway and may the rugs act as the rough. Utilize your plants, furniture, and home garden tools to the best of your abilities for an ultimate indoor course experience. Believe it or not, it works and half of the fun is the designing and setting it up.

Sitting With Plum

There's more to Lorraine Bracco than the face of Tony Soprano's acute psychologist, Dr. Jennifer Mefli. If you watched Plum's MorningNoon&Night Show this weekend, you learned about the actress' own wine label and vineyards in Italy. Perhaps she swaps tips with Wolffer, Duckwalk, and Channing Daughters.

Bracco's not the only familiar face that appeared before the camera. Designer Cynthia Rowley stopped by as well, and spoke about her memoir Slim. Think it's available at her store in East Hampton?

Squeezing in time between rock sessions, Nancy Atlas celebrated the release of her new documentary and double-CD. Next time we'll see if we can convince her to perform on set.

Mercedes Ruehl also spent some time with Plum. She's been a performer and audience member at Bay Street Theatre. Maybe she's got tickets to Lewis Black's sold out show?

A recognizable name isn't the only reason to tune in to the MorningNoon&Night Show. From grilling tips by local expert Tony Lawless to financial advice from Rocco Carreiro of Ameriprise, there's plenty of delicious information for your brain.

Ruth Appelhof, Guild Hall

Guild Hall Director Ruth Appelhof is our choice for the first individual of the Plum 98: those who have made a difference in this community. She oversees an East End artistic bastion, proving the arts can flourish a hundred miles from Manhattan. The works of Pollack and Warhol have hung on these walls. The John Drew Theatre in Guild Hall has staged writers from the Bard to Mamet. Striking a balance between the old and the modern, Ms. Appelhof has successfully steered this integral source of culture.

Enjoy the Farm Stands of the East End

Strawberries in June, blueberries in July, corn and tomatoes in August. There is nothing like the taste of fruit and vegetables picked from the field only hours—or minutes—before. The farm stands of the east end offer a seasonal bounty that is a big plus to being in these parts.

A Butterfly Garden Grows in East Quogue

Has anyone ever said a butterfly wasn’t beautiful? So, while people labor to create beautiful gardens, why not create a garden that attracts butterflies?

Venues of the Hamptons

Believe it or not, there's more to the Hamptons than sunny beaches, popular real estate, delicious dining, and an active nightlife. There's also the greatest in theatre, art, and music.

Bay Street Theatre:
Comedy Club: Funny-people Jim Breuer, Caroline Rhea, Louis CK, Craig Shoemaker, and Lewis Black (two shows) all perform live Monday nights.
Main Stage: The Night Season, a comedy starring Katherine Helmond, premieres begins its run at the Theatre tomorrow. The world premiere of the rock n roll musical Turandot: The Rumble for the Ring continues the season before it ends with another uproarious comedy The Lady in Question.
KidStreet: Your kids will love the brilliantly creative performances by Danna Banana, Hot Peas'N Butter, Norman Foote, Laughing Pizza, Justin Roberts and Astrograss.

Fire Up the Grill!

In case you missed it, Tony Lawless from Cromer's Market visited the MorningNoon&Night Show Memorial Day weekend and shared his tips for a great grilling experience:

  1. Buy great cuts of Porterhouse steak, pork, and lamb chops.
  2. Turn the grill on high and let it heat up.
  3. Live by the mantra "Buy great meat and just salt and pepper it." If the meat is good, the meal will be good.
  4. Put the pork on the grill and wait 5 minutes.
  5. Place the Porterhouse steak* on the grill (which Tony describes as "the King of Steak" and the "unbeatable choice" for beef).

Managing Your Portfolio

How diversified is your portfolio? Are you owning individually or through multiple investments such as 401k or an IRA? The risks of owning stock through multiple accounts can be worth it if you plan appropriately. Rocco Carriero filled us in with some financial tips when he spoke with Chris O'Connor.

Old and New Favorites in the Hamptons

Once again, it’s the Memorial Day weekend. The businesses of the Hamptons prepare for that great plunge into the season. This summer, the new and old mix in the moneyed stretch of the South Fork.

Rare Creature Washes Ashore at Gibson Beach

At 7 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23, morning strollers on Sagaponack's Gibson Beach saw the large carcass of what looked like a shark. Interestingly enough, it washed ashore near the recently-sold oceanfront home of Jaws star Roy Scheider. But this was no shark.

Plum sent pictures to the Riverhead Rescue Foundation's marine biologists, who clarified that the animal is indeed a sperm whale from either the pygmy or dwarf family. According to Foundation biologist Kimberly Durham, such a creature remains quite rare to these waters.
